“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now, you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; you put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; you put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” -- Bruce Lee
In a recent Rise Above™ Group Coaching session, I shared insights on resilience and adapting to change. In this session, I drew from the lessons I also addressed in one of the chapters of my book, Lead Again: A Modern Guide to Resilience.
Drawing from formative personal experiences, including the challenging loss of my family's home, when I was 17, and the constructive response of building an apartment in my grandmother's basement, I highlighted the importance of finding opportunities in adversity. I emphasized psychological flexibility and resilience as crucial in facing both personal and professional disruptions.
I also discussed the role of news in shaping perceptions, especially in politically tense times. I advised on the necessity of not being overwhelmed by negativity and advocated for a balanced approach to staying informed. The discussion spanned topics like political tensions, environmental concerns, and the impact of AI and technology on jobs.
A key focus was on self-improvement and "growing with the flow" of life's changes, encouraging the audience to embrace change rather than resist it. I stressed the significance of honesty and love in leadership and personal growth, underscoring that constructive engagement with disruptions can lead to creative opportunities and positive changes.
The session combined personal anecdotes, professional advice, and philosophical reflections, offering a comprehensive approach to building resilience and positively adapting to life's challenges.
